Devices

Re-evaluating Medical Device Usage in a Cost Conscious Environment

In an environment in which all stakeholders in the healthcare system are becoming economically constrained, medical device purchases and utilization are under increasingly higher scrutiny. The decision about which and when to use a medical device has evolved into a complex problem. Payers, providers, regulators, and even consumers now weigh the costs and benefits of using devices. The increase in healthcare costs is forcing changes in the decision making process around medical devices usage, transforming many medical practices as we know them today. Industry experts and leaders from prominent device and diagnostics organizations will share their viewpoints on how this issue will affect the research & development, sales & marketing, usage and associated outcomes of these products.

Health IT

Healthcare Information Technology is Increasing Transparency – Can It Empower You?

Healthcare information technology (HCIT) companies are working to increase transparency around costs, efficacy, and access to care. By empowering the consumer with these data, they can make informed choices about their care. The effect will be dazzling. When it comes to healthcare, the consumer is typically left in the dark. These companies are providing light. But many questions remain: Who will pay for it? When will this information be available? How do we know this data is providing an accurate view? And once the information is out there – will consumers actually change their behavior?

Payer/Provider

Payer and Provider Disruption: Shift towards Consumer Choice

The health care market is undergoing a new wave of consumer-focused disruption in both health insurance and health care delivery. First, the shift from large purchasers of group health insurance to less sophisticated purchasers of individual benefits will empower consumers to make purchasing decisions. Second, the emerging collaboration between providers and payers will move health care toward consumer-directed care, quality transparency, and Accountable Care Organizations. Our panel will discuss the impact of these disruptions on payers, providers and end consumers by exploring various questions such as: How can incumbent payers position themselves to take advantage of the shift towards individual consumer insurance? Who are some market entrants that may pose threats to health insurance incumbents? What are the some challenges that providers will face due this disruption? What collaboration is taking place between providers and payers as a reaction to healthcare consumerism? And how will the advent of Accountable Care Organizations affect consumers?

Pharma/Biotech

Targeted Relationships: Biopharma’s Evolving Strategies for Engaging Patients

As the biopharmaceutical industry embraces niche markets and moves away from the blockbuster model, it must also re-evaluate the way in which it engages patients.  No longer will direct-to-consumer advertising and broad sweeping sales forces effectively reach increasingly targeted patient populations.  Consumers may be difficult to find, let alone engage, and relationships with non-traditional customers such as patient advocacy groups could increase in priority.  Industry experts from both prominent biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies will discuss how their organizations’ relationships and interactions with patients have evolved.  The panel will share insights into the patient-focused strategies they have employed, as well as the various challenges and opportunities this evolving dynamic presents.

China IXP

MBA Student Experiences with China’s Healthcare System

China’s health sector faces significant challenges in delivering care and incentivizing best practices; at the same time, the country offers tremendous opportunities for healthcare innovation and entrepreneurship as Chinese consumers rapidly increase their health spending. A group of HBS students, led by HBS Professor Arthur Daemmrich, will be going to China over the winter to evaluate: how China can improve care quality and satisfy demands for broader access, what forms of private insurance would complement the public system, what financing system will sustain rapid progress in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device research, and what regulatory innovations will improve quality and safety. The students will also investigate the potential for Chinese firms in the health sector to become independent global players. HBS students will share their experiences and key learning about the Chinese healthcare system and the opportunities for entrepreneurship and innovation.
